Innovation Road Map
FIFA is looking to improve VAR technology at all levels of the game by garnering systematic feedback from competitions worldwide and trialling new iterations in line with The Vision 2020-2023.
FIFA Innovation Programme
The Innovation Programme is FIFA’s vehicle for dealing with innovative products that enter the market but are not ready or currently eligible for use in the game of football.
FIFA Research Programme
The Research Programme is responsible for leading the development of validation methods for the latest technologies for new and existing FIFA Quality Programmes as well as generating knowledge around these innovations.
Standards
Football turf
Football turf allows millions to play football in areas where preparing quality natural turf pitches is challenging. The surface is more resistant to climatic conditions and allows more frequent use.
Futsal surfaces
Futsal is a code of football most commonly played on an indoor floor surface. FIFA-certified installations of these surfaces guarantee optimal playability of the game.
Footballs
The FIFA Quality Programme for Footballs was introduced in 1996 to harmonise and improve the quality of the ball. Constant developments aim at further meeting the demands of the game.
Football goals
Alongside the ball, goals are an essential part of the game. The FIFA Quality Programme for Football Goals ensures that goals are consistent, safe and compliant with the Laws of the Game.
Goal-line technology
The Goal-line technology (GLT) testing procedure is based on the requirements set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and aims to test the functionality and robustness of GLT systems and to determine its accuracy.
Electronic performance and tracking systems
Electronic performance and tracking systems (EPTS), which include camera-based and wearable technologies, are used to control and improve player and team performance.
Virtual offside lines
Virtual offside lines (VOLs) are used as a visual assessment tool to help video assistant referees (VARs) to identify potential offside situations in football.
Video Assistant Referee
The use of video assistant referees (VARs) in football was included in the Laws of the Game in the 2018/2019 edition. FIFA has now launched the FIFA Quality Programme for VAR Technology, which assesses the technological aspects of VAR systems.
